Much as we believe that the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is fighting for a just cause, it is equally important for the Nasir Fagge led ASUU to tread the path of honour by suspending the strike.
It is noteworthy that it was not the President Goodluck Jonathan administration that cause the bulk of the issues why they embarked on strike and considering the magnanimity of the Jonathan led Federal Government, ASUU would do well to return to classes and save the ‘precious’ time of the students who now feel the brunt more than anyone else.
If ASUU leadership truly has the interest, development and survival of the nation’s education at heart, they should bow to the voice of reasoning and suspend the strike.
The era of a leader using strike to get undue ‘popularity’ ahead of future political ambition is over. Nigerians are wiser hence many who hitherto supported the strike now see it as one that has gone too far.
The rumour making rounds is that ASUU President is been used by the opposition to bring down the Jonathan administration with a promise of a reward as minister of education.
The striking lecturers should SAY NO to their President, Mr. Fagge on the continuation of the strike after keeping ‘innocent’ students they said they are fighting for their future at home for five months.
One cannot just dismiss this rumour as baseless going by other previous labour leaders like the Comrade Governor Oshiomhole, the incumbent Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega who used his position as ASUU President to gain relevant and credibility to earn him the exalted office he now occupied and Frank Kokori of the NUPENG fame [who later joined politics]. All used their position as labour leaders to better their lots and aspiration for better bargaining after leaving office that is why we cannot just wave away the rumour.
Progress loving Nigerians should join the federal government to end the strike by condemning the strike that is becoming another issue which is making Nigeria to be a laugh stock in the comity of nations!
